Do you have a soundtrack
for your books as you write them?
B.J.
Daniels:
Sylvie Kurtz: usually like to write in silence, but lately it's just been too quiet, so I've taken to listening to music without lyrics (too distracting when someone else is talking while I'm trying to write). My favorite these days is American Acoustic by Tingstad & Rumbel. The tone seems just right for the Gothic I'm writing right now (Pull of the Moon, Jan. 2007). Julie Miller: I do find that a certain song or soundtrack helps enrich the writing experience for each book for me. Generally, I'll already have the song or music in my head before I start to write--I don't know that it helps me brainstorm the story, but once I start writing, it's like, yeah--that's the one. Then I'll listen to that music over and over (much to my family's chagrin) over the weeks I'm writing. It does two things--first, it's an anchor, a tangible trigger that puts my mind right into the story when I'm ready to sit down and write; second--the right song captures the mood or tone of the story, and helps me stick with that theme. For the manuscript I just finished, Baby Jane Doe (Intrigue, Oct. 2006), I listened to the Wicked! soundtrack from the Broadway play. The song, For Good, really captures how a chance encounter can change someone's life irrevocably, and plays into my theme of people coming into our lives for a reason. In Baby Jane Doe, the hero/ine have such a meeting, and wind up changing who they think they are or have to be (all while the bad guys are trying to kill them, of course!). Ann Voss Peterson: I love to use movie soundtracks to put me in the right mood and to drown out distractions as I write. One of my favorites is the soundtrack for Body Heat. There's nothing more dangerous and sexy than that saxophone! While working my upcoming serial killer series, Wedding Mission--Serial Bride (June 2006), Evidence of Marriage (July 2006) Vowto Protect August 2006-- I discovered the soundtrack for Batman Begins. What wonderfully dark and intense music. It also conveys such longing in some passages. Just the feeling I wanted in my books! Kelsey Roberts: I don't have a soundtrack so much as an iMix. Yes, I'm an iPod junkie. Normally, I'll pick about 500 songs from my library ranging from The Black Eyed Peas to The Dixie Chicks. If I had to pick a single song for The Last Landry, it would be We Are in Love by Harry Connick, Jr. The song has a great lyrics and Lord knows, Harry Connick can take any song and make it magic. Happy Reading Amanda Stevens: I always have a soundtrack running in my head for my books. In fact, my very first book for Silhouette Intimate Moments was inspired by a song called The Killing Moon by Echo and the Bunnymen. I've used Angel by Massive Attack for several of my Intrigues, and for my supernatural stories, I love Skinny Puppy's Assimiliate. If I'm writing about obsession, nothing beats Depeche Mode's In Your Room or Nothing's Impossible. I'm currently working on The Dollmaker, my first Mira release (available Spring 2007), and I'd have to say the song that best suits the hero and heroine is Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division. Rebecca York: I listen to a variety of music while I'm working--everything from Meatloaf to opera. I often like to put an opera on the IPod. I love the blending of voices and orchestra, and I don't have to worry about what the singers are saying. (When I actually go to an opera performance and read the supertitles, I tend to go nuts because the plot rarely makes sense. Plot is important to me, but I have to give up on it for operas.) So, no, I don't have any particular sound track for my books. The hero of my April 2006 Intrigue, The Secret Night, is a vampire. He also likes classical music, since that's what he grew up with. He likes the irony of listening to Mozart's A Little Night Music. |
