Mysterious Circumstances by Rita Herron,  ISBN: 0373228619

Would the mysterious circumstances that brought them together also tear them apart?

Complicating matters, he'd finally met his match in feisty reporter Olvia Thornbird.  But while trying to get her scoop, Olivia becomes the victim of dangerous threats -- and honor demands Craig offer his protection. Going to Extremes by Amanda Stevens, Big Sky Bounty Hunters, ISBN: 0373228627

Aidan Campbell instinctively flew into the fray when the authorities rallied the troops to catch a gang of escaped convicts. Yet, as the adventurous bounty hunter scoured the storm-swept terrain with his teammates, he unexpectedly found himself rescuing a blond beauty dangling precariously from a cliff.

His protective nature kicked into high gear when Kaitlyn Wilson's fragmented memories recalled a grisly crime carried out by the very militia members he hunted. After Aidan spirited the fiercely independent investigative reporter away to a safe house, it seemed pointless to battle their potent attraction in the passionate afterglow. But when Kaitlyn's nose for the news lured her to trouble, could a heroic, high-speed helicopter chase prevent a full-scale catastrophe?

Now the man who'd just rescued her needed Dr. Rachel Harper's help.  Assuming his brother's identity to infiltrate a conspiracy inside a mental hospital, Eric Baldwyn was about to embark on the most dangerous mission of his life. And as danger fanned the flames of irresistible desire, much more than Rachel's career would be on the line...

Question of the Month
It's usually easy for authors to love their heroes and heroines. This month let's talk about villains. Which of your villains is your favorite, and why? Is it your most diabolical evil genius? Or maybe the one who is most human and likeable?

B J Daniels:
I love my villains! And yes, I really love "female" villains. One of my favorites (and a fan favorite) was Lorna in my Code Red series book Crossfire (Apr 05). I couldn't believe how many readers (and editors) fell in love with Lorna--a woman who had killed her elderly parents--and the first time you meet her, she's cooking up a batch of cookies with something lethal in them! And yet everyone was on her side! Unlike Lorna, the villain in my next book (part of the Fernhaven series with Amanda Stevens and Joanna Wayne), When Twilight Comes (Oct 05), is just asking for it. I think we all love it when those kinds of villains get what's coming to them!  My favorite villain though is the one you least expect and I have a dandy one in Crime Scene at Cardwell Ranch (Feb 06). This book kicks off a new crime series set in Montana. Yes, I love my villains and I'm working on a really good one right now for Secret Weapon Spouse (5/06) as part of the Miami Confidential series.

Rita Herron:
My favorite villain is the killer in my single title romantic suspense, A Breath Away, (May 05). I loved writing him because he was truly psychotic, had nervous ticks, and really believed that he was justified in doing what he was doing, even though he was very sick and twisted. He was a fascinating character to write.   I also like the villain in my August Intrigue, Mysterious Circumstances, because he's actually very ingenious, collaborates for his cause instead of being an individual, and also believes his purpose justifies his means.  His unique way of killing brands him as special in my book and also is a different twist from anything I've done so far. Hope you enjoy it!

Mallory Kane:
I love writing smart, diabolical villains. I also love writing villains who are psychopaths or sociopaths. One of my favorite villains was Gerard Fontenot in my premier Intrigue The Lawman Who Loved Her. To me he's the quintessential diabolical sociopath. I hope one day to write a sequel and use Fontenot again. In my current release, Seeking Asylum, (Ultimate Agents, Book 3, Aug 05), the villain is a powerful, brilliant man, and he truly believes that the end justifies the means, as horrendous as his means are.

Susan Kearney:
My favorite villains are smart and have an agenda.  In my current series, the villains are an ancient race called the Zin.  In my July book for Tor titled The Dare we only know that the Zin are ancient enemies of the race that seeded the galaxy--and when ancient guardians are recalled, it leaves the galaxy open to invasion by the Zin.  It's a good thing the hero and heroine are more than up for the task of reprogramming these ancient machines.  But the villain is not destroyed, but waiting for The Ultimatum and another chance to wreak havoc.

Sylvie Kurtz:
Villains are just plain fun to write.  You can take your bad guy's worst pains and disappointments and let him take all the wrong paths as he tries to "fix" what ails him.  In Eye of a Hunter (The Seekers Book 3, Aug 05), Rafe tries to build the family and respect he's always wanted by manipulation and coercion and it leaves him feeling lonelier than ever.  In Pride of a Hunter (The Seekers Book 4, Sep 05), Warren seeks revenge against his mother's neglect against other single mothers, but even making them hurt doesn't heal his wounds.

Julie Miller:
I suppose my favorite Intrigue villain ever was Emmett Raines from my very first Intrigue, One Good Man. Emmett was a clever chameleon whose intimidating intellect was focused entirely on revenge. He even took out lesser villains to get to the object of his revenge--the heroine. The fact that he was so driven, so cold, so smart required a super-courageous heroine and a hero tough enough and smart enough to not just match him, but beat him. Emmett was definitely larger than life.  Of course, Boone Fowler, the leader of the Montana Militia for a Free America, the super villain in Intrigue's Big Sky Bounty Hunter mini-series, is a bit larger than life himself. Very smart. Very resourceful. Very large and in charge. But what I think made him so interesting to write (and scary!) was his motivation--he truly believes in his political agenda. What he's willing to do in the name of patriotism makes him a super villain in my book. Look for Boone to show up in Forbidden Captor, Big Sky Bounty Hunters Book 4 (Nov 05).

Ann Voss Peterson:
I love villains! Maybe it says something about me, but I adore figuring out why they do the things they do. And I love how a great villain can push a hero and heroine to heroism of which they never believed themselves capable. My upcoming book, Marital Privilege, (Oct 05), has a great villain. A "big man" in the Russian mob who also happens to be the father my hero sent to prison years before. He's a brutal man who has triumphed over brutal circumstances. But my favorite villain of all time has to be serial killer Dryden Kane from Accessory to Marriage (Jan 02), and next summer he's back! Dryden Kane, and all the research I did to create him, has given me nightmares for years--and it's going to take three books to bring him to justice. So be sure to look over your shoulder in June, July and August of 2006!

Kelsey Roberts:
I love villains, all villains, since I firmly believe the stronger the villain, the stronger the the hero and heroine must be to thwart them.  My personal favorite type of villain is the villain motivated by revenge.  This type of character allows me to spend a great deal of time creating a history and motivation for the villain.  The villain in The Last Landry (Mar 06) was a lot of fun, mainly because the villain has been on page for all seven of the Landry books.

Rebecca York:
Villains are easy for me to write.  I guess I like evil.  <g>  But the most successful villains are the ones who have a reason for their behavior and their  philosophy of life.  In my August single title from Berkley, Beyond Control, Kurt MacArthur runs a quasi-government think tank.  He takes on the dirty jobs that other government agencies wouldn't touch--like dirty tricks and assassinations.  He thinks of himself as a patriot.  He's protecting the U. S. from threats like terrorists attacks nuclear war.  And he will stop at nothing to fulfill his mission.  Unfortunately, he decides the hero and heroine of the book represent a significant threat to national security.  Lindsay Fleming and Jordan Walker are sexually linked telepaths who discover that the more intimate they become, the more their psychic abilities develop.  When MacArthur discovers their rare talent, he decides he must control them--or kill them.  And I hope that following his thinking processes will be as fascinating to readers as it was to me.
